Spencer was assigned to give the youth talk in church yesterday. Unfortunately he was gone for three days backpacking with the scouts, and he collapsed the second he arrived home, giving me no time to work with him to make sure he had his talk ready to go. I had a super early church meeting in the morning, so I wasn't able to sit with him in the morning either, but I was willing to be late if he needed some extra help on it. I woke him up as I was leaving the house to see if he had his talk ready to go. He assured me that it was done. Right before church I asked him again to see if I needed to help. That's when he pulls this 2x3 sticky note out of his pocket, shows it to me, and says, "Oh yeah. I've got this."
I'll admit that I wasn't so confident that he was going to be able to pull this talk off. I've never seen him give a talk without it being completely written out. But he looked at me with total confidence, and since I got to be the concluding speaker I figured I could clean up any mess he left behind.
He ended up doing a lovely job. Sure. It was a youth talk, so it wasn't totally polished or anything like that. But it was obvious that Spencer had spent some time pondering his topic and these scripture references. He knew what point he wanted to make, and he made it clearly.
I was super proud of him and the good young man he is growing to be. If only he could work on his penmanship a bit.
