Why Didn't My College Have a 'Director of Wow!'?

Even though Savannah was only a freshman in high school this year she took the ACT to see how she would do. She took it in 7th grade for the Duke Talent Search and did really well. Really well. She got a 30 out of a possible 36, and she even got a perfect score of 36 on the reading section and was offered a full ride scholarship to a Duke summer program that year. It was pretty amazing, but Savannah was worried that she had peaked and would never score that high ever again. She was pretty concerned about taking it again because she didn't want to score lower. But we convinced her to give it a go this year and see what happened. The chances were good that she would score higher than she did as a 7th grader because she has been exposed to so much more math now than she had been. So she took the test last February and got ... a 32! Hurray! That is a pretty impressive score for a freshman. Her scores were sent all across the country to various schools, and now those schools who are impressed with her scores are sending her advertisements and invitations to investigate their schools. That isn't unusual. Every kid who takes the ACT gets those invitations. I don't know how many freshman are getting recruited so early though. Laney gets these invitations as well (and, by the way, she kicked tail on the ACT as well with a 31!), but Laney's emails go to her own personal email. Savannah decided to have hers sent to mine, so I'm the one who gets to shuffle through her college emails first. Normally I just read and quickly delete these emails because Savannah isn't anywhere close to thinking about narrowing her college choices. But every once in a while an invitation comes along that soars above the rest. One such invitation came today in my email from the great Andy Bills at High Point University. Now, I have never heard of High Point University, but I have to say that the things that they brag on in this email are unlike anything else I have ever seen in a college email. My words are insufficient to explain it, so here is the email I received (I highlighted the part I found interesting/hilarious):

Seriously?????? A Director of Wow!? What exactly does a Director of Wow! do? Why didn't my college have a Director of Wow!? Just think what sort of college experience I could have had if only Drury had its own Director of Wow!! And that's not all. Valet parking? Really? FREE valet parking. And a live band during meals! And that's not all. Car washes. Did you read that world? Car washes. And what about the birthday surprises and free snacks. FREE SNACKS people! I'm starting to realize that I might have gotten the short end of the stick at college. I wonder if they offer free back and neck massages during finals week. Maybe I'll ask the Director of Wow! if they can get right on making that happen.

This was definitely the most unique college invite I've seen so far. I thought it was interesting that it didn't really talk at all about any of the academic value of the university at all. But the amenities? Now there is something to talk about. I'm sure that High Point U is a fine institution, so I don't mean to mock them as a school, but I have to say that this invite totally made my day.

Savannah is still a long way from making a college choice, but I can already tell that this is going to be interesting.

  1. Sounds like a fictional college from a movie about stoner slackers, but otherwise props to Savannah on her score and for being one of those people who keeps taking it until it drives them insane. She should probably focus on the SAT as I never took that for some stupid reason.
