| Our day of crafting -- this picture is at the leather stamping table |
Today ended up being a really crafty day for me. I didn't
really want to end up crafting during my time at Philmont. I wanted to be out
in the outdoors doing stuff. But the schedule worked out in such a way today
that I ended up inside. But I had a really great time. I had signed up to make
a neat looking glass pendant that had a map of a spot in Philmont. It was super
easy to do. It kind of reminded me of mod podge, but a lot sturdier. There was
about three hours for this activity, but the whole thing only took about half
an hour. I chose to use the map spot for Lover's Leap since Herman and I are
doing that sunrise hike on Thursday. I think it'll look way cool in the end. In
fact, it was so easy to do I plan on having Laney and Savannah make the same
pendant with a spot on the map where they are hiking this week. I also think
this would be an excellent craft to do at Girls Camp. Super easy and fairly
fast. I still have to come back several times to add new layers, but the entire
process isn't that difficult.
Since that craft took very little time, I decided to
stick around the handicraft cabin and do something else. They had so many cool
things to do. I decided to paint a ceramic vase. I've only done one ceramic
thing before, but each time I do it I always wonder why exactly I don't do it
more often. I wouldn't be one of those people who paint intricate details on
the stuff, but I do love the cool glazes that are available. I painted my vase
with a glaze that will end up being a dark green, but now looks light lavender.
It just has to sit around for awhile until the staff gets a chance to fire it
in a few days. The neat thing about this activity was that I got to sit around
and talk with other ladies who were doing the same thing. Like I say, I'm not a
terribly sociable person, so I generally avoid these sorts of things, but this
ended up being nice.
Tuesday afternoon was family time. That basically meant
that we had free time all afternoon. Herman started out by having Minsy take a
nap. She needed it. She was being a total grump. While they lay down in the
tent, the rest of us headed over to the craft cabin since there were so many
cool things to do. Katie and Hyrum both stamped leather bracelets. Katie's was
a CTR bracelet, and Hyrum did a Cub Scout design. JoJo bought a wooden arrow
and painted that. Katie also took some time to paint a K for her room. Everyone
had a lot of fun. Herman eventually arrived and made his own leather Philmont
belt that he can wear with his scout uniform.
After hanging out for a bit of time at the craft cabin we
had some time, so we headed to the main store for the Philmont Ranch. It is
quite the thing for hiking equipment, and since they are the only gig in town
for that sort of stuff they are able to
charge a ton of money for the stuff they offer. I didn't bring a poncho for
myself, so I thought I might pick one up, but it cost almost $60. For that
price I think I would rather just stay wet. But we did buy Philmont shirts for
all of us. That didn't cost too horribly much.
While we were in that area of Philmont Herman drove us
out into the back country to show us they spot in the mountains where they had
done their priesthood training that morning. It was near the Tooth of Time
mountain, and it was really beautiful. After the kids had gotten busy playing
during a free moment, Herman told me about an amazing spiritual experience that
he had had that morning. It isn't my place to share it here, but it was one of
those experiences that can completely change the direction of a life. It was
way cool, and I am so incredibly happy to be married to a man who seeks out the
will of his Heavenly Father and willingly agrees to do what is asked, even if
it seems almost impossible. This new direction seems incredibly impossible, but
I have total faith that Herman can do it. Hooray for experiences like these.
There were some family activities tonight that included a
movie and a live band. Herman took everyone there, but I felt like I should
take Katie back to the craft cabin so that we could make some custom necklaces.
This was quite a popular activity, so there were tons of ladies hanging out at
the jewelry counter, but Katie and I were able to get right in and start making
our bead necklaces. I am not normally very talented when it comes to picking out
colors for things like that, but I have to say, these turned out wonderfully.
After piecing the beads together on a little template, we started to string
them. It didn't really take too long once we got started, but it was a process.
The worst part came when we had to pay for the necklace. Each bead cost a
different price, so the workers had to look up the price of every single bead.
Our necklaces had at least a hundred beads on them, so it ended up taking
almost half an hour to price the stuff. I felt horrible because we didn't get
the price completed until fifteen minutes after closing. It was wonderful to
spend so much time with Katie. JoJo was super sad that I didn't do the same for
him, so I have an appointment scheduled for JoJo/Mom time tomorrow.
Overall it was another wonderful day at Philmont. I am
getting so much insight and understanding as I am here. Some of the things I am
feeling are super personal, so I don't feel like sharing them in a blog post,
but I feel as if I am receiving real guidance about things I can do to better
myself and my family. These are significant revelations that will require some
bigger sacrifice on my part, but I feel as if Heavenly Father is truly blessing
me to have these experiences, so I'd better pay attention, don't you think?
Tomorrow I begin my more outdoorsy and physical part of
the week. I hope I am able to handle it.
